An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.
A particular user, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.
However these probabilities had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in positions right before the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," said a financial reform advocate.
A handful of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Elected officials are starting to take note.
Proposed legislation presented on recently aims to prohibit public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from elections to politics.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.
Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
