Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he to later acknowledge that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

Matteo's Surprising Comeback

A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He signed originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Discovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Originally described as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
