New research suggests that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using these medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
