The speculation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
