He has done things 10,000 times as bad β the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID amounts to 600,000 and rising, and this week an analysis forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked β truly, no previous leader would have imagined β independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

As disorienting as it is to witness the chief executive seek toι’ θ¦ the traditional concept regarding democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us β in older age cohorts close to half β who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed across decades as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Savior that I grew up with, as conceptually Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans could have minimal awareness of him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably not the account of a powerful ruler arising; instead, a baby is born to homeless parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to evade covert authorities. The infant develops in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his doctrine focuses on affection for others, particularly for the impoverished β and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Jesus' answer to hostility is to offer the opposite cheek β not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a way to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you ought to provide them your pullover as well.
The apparent and clear fact that the Jesus from scripture advocates for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: appealing to the general public, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down β Protestantism was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Highest Within Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to see the steadfast resistance regarding Trump develop in this past year.
