Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to offload part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – a record for an F1 team – following McLaren were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

Wolff, who owns a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team principal and CEO if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no comment on this. The management structure of the team stays unchanged, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Financial Growth

The deal would represent a significant increase in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos Group bought its share for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the increasing appeal of Formula 1 globally.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed more than $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

It is Pitt's most successful movie and the highest-earning sports movie to date.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
